Tomorrow.io Launches Second Satellite and Closes Series E Funding

by

Tomorrow.io, the leading weather intelligence and climate adaptation platform, has announced the successful launch of its R2 satellite and the completion of its $87 million Series E funding round. Activate Capital led the funding round, with participation from new investors including RTX Ventures, Seraphim, and Chemonics, as well as existing investors SquarePeg Capital, Canaan, ClearVision, JetBlue Ventures, and Pitango Growth.

Founded in 2016, Tomorrow.io aims to assist individuals, businesses, and governments in solving weather and climate-related challenges. Earlier this year, the company made significant announcements about the successful launch of the world’s first commercially built satellites equipped with a Ka-band weather radar and the introduction of “Gale,” the industry’s first weather and climate generative AI.

With the launch of the R1 and R2 satellites, Tomorrow.io has expanded the capabilities for weather observation and modeling by delivering a rich and comprehensive precipitation dataset. These satellites, equipped with radar and microwave sounders, provide a 10 times higher revisit rate compared to existing technologies. Tomorrow.io plans to launch additional radars and microwave sounders over the next 18-24 months, aiming to complete a constellation of more than 20 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). This constellation will significantly enhance weather forecasting capabilities globally, covering every location on Earth, including over the oceans.

Tomorrow.io’s generative AI technology, represented by Gale, stands at the forefront of innovation. By leveraging the unique dataset obtained from Tomorrow.io’s satellites, Gale empowers organizations to convert climate and weather data into predictive and actionable insights.

Renowned companies such as JetBlue, Fox Sports, the United States Air Force, Ford, and Uber already rely on Tomorrow.io for its cutting-edge technology. The platform enables early warning systems, actionable insights, and operational resilience to mitigate risks and predict the impact of high-impact weather events.

The Series E funding will be used to expedite the completion of Tomorrow.io’s full satellite constellation, consisting of radar-equipped satellites and microwave sounders. Additionally, the company will allocate funds to strategic initiatives aligned with its mission of helping humanity adapt to the future of the planet, as highlighted in the documentary “6 Years to Launch.”

Tomorrow.io’s integrated approach, combined with its satellite constellation and generative AI capabilities, is set to revolutionize the way people utilize weather information to adapt to the changing climate.
