Sparxell Secures $3.2M Investment for Sustainable Plant-Based Plastic-Free Colorants

by

Sparxell, a UK-based developer of sustainable plant-based pigments, has successfully raised $3.2 million in funding to further advance its mission of providing fully sustainable, biodegradable, and circular colorants. The investment round, comprising seed investments, grants, and awards, was led by prominent investors including the Circular Innovation Fund, SpaceX-backer Future Communities Capital, sustainability-focused investor PDS Ventures, and others.

The company plans to utilize the funds to accelerate the development and commercialization of its innovative products, which aim to eliminate synthetic chemicals from colorants across multi-billion dollar markets such as cosmetics, fashion, paint, and packaging. Sparxell intends to expand its manufacturing capacity, forge strategic partnerships with brands, conduct additional product trials, and bolster its team.

Founded in 2022 by Cambridge scientists Dr. Benjamin Droguet and Professor Silvia Vignolini, Sparxell has pioneered a breakthrough technology that replicates vibrant colors found in nature using fully plant-based cellulose extracted from waste streams. These pigments offer superior color intensity, durability, and fade resistance compared to traditional colorants, while being toxin-free and fully biodegradable.

Sparxell’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its products to its manufacturing processes, which are conducted in a lab using natural inputs, thus eliminating plastic waste, carbon emissions, water pollution, and associated human rights issues in supply chains.

The company has already established product innovation partnerships with leading companies in various industries, including automotive, fashion, and cosmetics. With its innovative approach to colorants, Sparxell is poised to disrupt the market and drive a profound shift towards sustainability without compromising performance.

The successful funding round underscores the growing demand for environmentally friendly alternatives in the colorants industry and positions Sparxell as a key player in driving positive change in the sector.
