Frasers Group Joins £40M Investment Fund for AI and Data Startups

Frasers Group, owned by billionaire Mike Ashley, has announced its involvement in a new £40 million investment fund aimed at supporting early-stage startups in the AI and data sectors. The venture, led by London and Belfast-based VC firm Iona Star, has successfully raised £22 million in the fund’s first close. The fund will primarily focus on startups utilizing AI and data, offering investments ranging from £1 million to £3 million to accelerate their growth.

The initiative aligns with Frasers Group’s broader strategy of leveraging AI and data technologies to enhance operational efficiency and customer experiences. The company, which owns House of Fraser and Sports Direct, has committed £10 million to the fund. Frasers Group CEO, Michael Murray, emphasized the importance of AI in modern retail operations, stating, “Data and AI technologies have become fundamental to our strategy, unlocking new ways for us to operate more efficiently while elevating the shopping experience for our customers.” He added that the partnership with Iona Star will help Frasers Group collaborate with top innovators in AI, boosting their capabilities and supporting the company’s broader growth ambitions.

Backing Innovation with AI Expertise

Iona Star was founded by Gerry Buggy, co-founder of Ocula Technologies, a Belfast-based AI retail platform known for its work with large retail groups. Ocula recently raised £3.25 million in July 2023, further highlighting the strong market demand for AI solutions in the retail sector. Iona Star plans to capitalize on this momentum by targeting businesses with proprietary datasets and innovative AI applications that create competitive advantages.

Buggy expressed confidence in the opportunities available in the AI and data space, stating, “We believe that our experience as operators, combined with a strategic network across data and technology, provides the fuel to accelerate our portfolio companies. This is the first close due to the strong pipeline of opportunities we finally see with defensive and competitive AI moats, particularly around proprietary datasets.”

In addition to Frasers Group’s contribution, the fund has also received a £10 million investment from Castelnau Group, which previously backed Ocula Technologies. Richard Brown, CEO of Castelnau Group, commented on the significance of this new fund, noting, “Iona Star LP is intending to invest in a fast-moving segment of the market, with a management team that brings a successful and proven track record. We are eager to see the benefits that Iona Star’s investments will bring to Castelnau’s wider investment portfolio.”

Proven Track Record and Expertise

Iona Star’s leadership team boasts extensive experience in scaling and managing technology companies, with Buggy being joined by co-founders Mike Powell, Graham Ferguson, and Kevin McGivern. The firm has already achieved several successful exits, including the sale of Quantile, a regulatory compliance platform, to the London Stock Exchange Group in 2022 for £274 million. Another notable exit includes RxDataScience, which merged with US biopharma company Syneos Health.

The combination of Iona Star’s expertise and Frasers Group’s investment underscores the increasing importance of AI in industries like retail, where data-driven insights and automation are becoming critical to business success.
