Riot Games, the studio behind League of Legends, has announced another round of layoffs, despite also promising future growth for the League team. In a post on X, co-founder Marc Merrill shared that the company is restructuring to enhance the League experience, leading to the elimination of several roles.
Merrill emphasized that the layoffs, which impacted 27 League of Legends developers and five publishing staff, are not a cost-cutting measure. Instead, he said the decision was driven by the need for “the right expertise” to ensure League‘s continued success over the long term.
Despite the job cuts, Merrill assured fans that the League team would eventually grow larger as they develop the next phase of the game.
This comes less than a year after Riot laid off 530 employees and closed its Riot Forge program. At that time, CEO Dylan Jadeja explained that the company needed to regain focus, noting that many projects weren’t delivering expected results.
