Tesla Sold 74,402 China-Made EVs in February, Up 32% Year-Over-Year

by

Tesla sold 74,402 China-made electric vehicles (EVs) in February, up 32% year-over-year, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association. The strong sales figures came despite a global semiconductor shortage that has hampered the production of many automakers.

Tesla’s China-made vehicles, which include the Model 3 and Model Y, have been well-received in the country due to their affordability and quality. In January, Tesla sold more than 33,000 China-made EVs, which was more than double the number it sold in the same month a year earlier.

China is the world’s largest market for EVs, and Tesla has been working to increase its market share in the country. The company opened its first factory outside the United States in Shanghai in 2019, and it has been ramping up production there to meet demand.

In addition to its China-made vehicles, Tesla also sells imported vehicles in the country. In February, the company sold 3,183 imported vehicles, which was down from the 4,680 it sold in the same month a year earlier.

Despite the strong sales figures, Tesla has faced some challenges in China recently. In February, the company was forced to recall nearly 37,000 China-made Model S and Model X vehicles due to safety issues with their suspensions. However, the company was able to resolve the issue quickly and resume production.

Looking ahead, Tesla is planning to expand its production capacity in China. The company is building a new factory in the city of Giga Shanghai, which is expected to begin production later this year. The new factory will produce the Model Y, as well as a new vehicle designed specifically for the Chinese market.

In conclusion, Tesla’s strong sales figures in China are a positive sign for the company as it seeks to expand its market share in the world’s largest market for EVs. Despite some recent challenges, Tesla’s China-made vehicles have been well-received by consumers, and the company’s commitment to increasing production capacity in the country demonstrates its long-term commitment to the Chinese market.
