Pennsylvania American Water Secures .3M in PENNVEST Funding for Infrastructure Projects

Pennsylvania American Water has been awarded $19.3 million in low-interest loans and a grant from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST). The funding will support crucial infrastructure projects, including upgrades to a wastewater treatment plant in McKean County and the replacement of lead water service lines in Allegheny County.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades in McKean County
A $2.46 million loan and $1.64 million grant will fund improvements at the Kinzua Road Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kane Borough. The project will enhance preliminary treatment, UV disinfection, aeration, and sludge handling processes, as well as modernize the plant’s electrical and technology systems. These updates will increase the plant’s peak wet weather flow capacity from 3.5 million gallons per day (MGD) to 5.25 MGD, reducing combined sewer overflow bypass events and improving wastewater management.

Lead Service Line Replacement in Allegheny County
A $15.2 million loan will finance the replacement of 250 lead water service lines in Homestead Borough. This project aims to eliminate leaded components from the public water system, improving water quality for residents and aligning with regulatory initiatives to remove lead from water infrastructure.

Affordable Loan Terms
The Kinzua Road Wastewater Treatment Plant project loan carries a 1% interest rate for a 30-year term, while the Homestead Borough loan features a 1% rate for the first five years and 1.743% for the remaining 20 years.

Tony Nokovich, Interim Vice President of Engineering at Pennsylvania American Water, emphasized the importance of the funding, stating, “This funding will have a positive impact on the service provided for many of our customers by enabling us to continue our efforts to remove lead service lines and repair aging wastewater infrastructure.”

These projects underscore Pennsylvania American Water’s commitment to enhancing water quality and infrastructure while meeting environmental and regulatory standards.
