NCSoft, the South Korean game developer, has laid off an undisclosed number of employees as part of a “broader internal reorganization.” The company announced that certain development projects and support functions would be downsized or closed to improve resource allocation efficiency. As part of the restructuring, NCSoft is offering a voluntary retirement program and reassigning internal staff.
Co-CEOs Taek-Jin Kim and Byung-Moo Park cited a “deteriorating” financial situation during the second quarter, putting the company at risk of becoming a deficit company. The leadership emphasized the need for “large-scale change” to secure the company’s future, promising compensation and support for affected employees.
In addition to layoffs, NCSoft has established four new subsidiaries focused on game development and AI. These include three independent studios—Studio X, Y, and Z—working on titles like Throne and Liberty, Project LLL, and Tactan, respectively, as well as an AI-focused entity called NC AI to advance the company’s proprietary AI technology.
