IBM Acquires Kubecost to Expand Hybrid Cloud Cost Management

IBM has acquired Kubecost, a leading provider of Kubernetes cost monitoring and optimization software, to enhance its hybrid cloud cost management capabilities.

As Kubernetes usage grows rapidly, with 84% of organizations adopting or evaluating the technology, managing costs for complex, container-based workloads has become a key challenge. IBM’s acquisition of Kubecost aims to address these concerns by improving cost visibility and resource optimization for cloud practitioners.

This move strengthens IBM’s commitment to FinOps, a strategic approach to optimizing cloud usage. Kubecost will now integrate into IBM’s FinOps suite, which already includes tools like IBM Cloudability and IBM Turbonomic. This expanded offering will help organizations manage and optimize their cloud investments, regardless of where workloads are hosted.

Kubecost’s real-time cost insights provide FinOps teams with the ability to reduce infrastructure spend and prevent resource overuse. Its integration with Kubernetes and cloud billing APIs offers a detailed view of cloud workloads, allowing for better cost control and operational efficiency.

The acquisition follows IBM’s recent purchase of Apptio in 2023, further demonstrating IBM’s focus on automating IT environments through a combination of innovation and strategic acquisitions.

Founded in 2019, Kubecost is headquartered in San Francisco and led by Co-founders Webb Brown (CEO) and Ajay Tripathy (CTO).
