Google Lays Off Over 200 ‘Core’ Employees, Shifts Operations Overseas

by

Google has announced the layoff of over 200 employees from its “Core” division as part of a restructuring effort. According to a report by CNBC, the tech giant is also relocating an unspecified number of roles to India and Mexico. These changes come just days before Google’s scheduled Q1 2024 earnings announcement on April 25.

Impact on Core Division

The layoffs primarily affected software engineers, with nearly 50 employees based at Google’s Sunnyvale, California headquarters among those let go. The “Core” division, as described on Google’s website, is responsible for developing the technical backbone for Google’s flagship products, ensuring user safety, and maintaining internal IT systems to enhance employee productivity.

Restructuring Amid Industry-Wide Layoffs

Google’s decision is part of a broader trend of cost-cutting measures within the tech industry, which has seen widespread layoffs throughout 2024. The move to relocate some roles overseas aligns with efforts by tech companies to optimize costs while maintaining operational efficiency.

Looking Ahead

As Google prepares to release its Q1 earnings, these changes underscore the company’s focus on restructuring to remain competitive. While the layoffs mark a challenging time for affected employees, the reallocation of roles signals a shift in how the tech giant manages its global workforce to adapt to evolving market dynamics.
