Adobe has unveiled a new feature called Generative Expand in its beta version of Photoshop, which allows users to expand and resize images beyond their original bounds. By clicking and dragging the Crop tool and then hitting the “Generate” button, users can expand the canvas, and the AI-powered Generative Expand fills the new white space with content that seamlessly blends with the existing image.

This feature is particularly useful when subjects are cut off or when images need to be adjusted to a specific aspect ratio. The generated content can be added to a canvas with or without a text prompt, and any inappropriate content is filtered out by the AI.

Generative Expand is not a unique feature in the world of generative AI, as other platforms like OpenAI have offered similar uncropping tools. However, Adobe’s strategic integration with Photoshop, which boasts approximately 29 million users worldwide, sets it apart.

The native integration allows users to utilize the Generative Expand feature seamlessly within the popular image editing software. While the feature is currently in beta and not available for commercial use, Adobe plans to enable commercial use in the second half of the year.

In addition to Generative Expand, Adobe is expanding support for its text-to-image features, powered by its generative AI model called Firefly, to over 100 languages, including Arabic, Czech, Greek, and Thai. The text-to-image feature has already been used to generate over 900 million images to date.

This move by Adobe showcases its commitment to harnessing the power of generative AI to enhance creative workflows and offer more versatile and intuitive image editing options to its large user base. The addition of Generative Expand and the expanded language support further solidifies Photoshop’s position as a leading tool for designers, photographers, and creative professionals.
