The Mozilla Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Firefox creator Mozilla, has laid off nearly 30% of its staff in response to rapid changes in the tech landscape. Mozilla’s communications chief, Brandon Borrman, confirmed the layoffs, describing the move as a restructuring to increase focus and agility.
Executive Director Nabiha Syed announced in an email that two major divisions — advocacy and global programs — would no longer continue as standalone entities. However, Borrman clarified that advocacy remains integral to Mozilla’s mission and will be woven into other functions.
Syed explained that the foundation is aiming to “create a unified, powerful narrative” in its work, noting that the restructuring aligns with Mozilla’s mission to prioritize privacy, inclusion, and decentralization, even as it faces industry headwinds. Syed expressed that “putting people before profit feels increasingly radical” in today’s fast-evolving tech environment, underscoring the foundation’s commitment to its principles despite the difficult restructuring decisions.
