Midwest Transport Inc. Ceases Operations, Lays Off 222 Employees in Florida

by

Midwest Transport Inc., a trucking company based in Illinois, recently laid off 222 employees in Florida after being forced to shut down by a creditor. The layoffs affected workers at the company’s terminals in Tampa and Jacksonville, with each location losing 111 jobs.

This closure comes after the company was unable to secure the capital needed to continue operations due to a creditor stepping in and requiring the cessation of business.

Midwest Transport also closed three other terminals nationwide, including its corporate office in Illinois, terminating a total of 504 employees across the country. The company, which once had over 650 employees and a fleet of more than 450 units, had been a long-time contractor for the U.S. Postal Service.

The layoffs occurred on September 9, but the company’s official notification to state officials, required under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, was sent on September 30, with the notice not appearing in Florida’s WARN database until October 7.

The company is currently being liquidated, with only a few administrative workers, fleet managers, and mechanics remaining to wrap up operations.
