Formlabs Acquires Micronics to Enhance SLS 3D Printing Capabilities

by

Formlabs, a leading 3D printing company based in Somerville, MA, has acquired Micronics, a Wisconsin-based 3D printing firm. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Strategic Expansion

The acquisition aims to integrate Micronics’ founders and team into Formlabs, strengthening their collective mission to make SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) 3D printing accessible to product designers, engineers, and innovators worldwide. Micronics, under the leadership of CEO Henry Chan, announced its first desktop SLS 3D printer, Micron, on Kickstarter in June 2024. The compact printer is designed for creating detailed prototypes and durable end-use products. Following the acquisition, Kickstarter backers of Micron will be refunded and offered credits for any Formlabs 3D printer.

Formlabs’ Growing Portfolio

Formlabs, led by CEO Max Lobovsky, is renowned for its SLA (Stereolithography) and SLS 3D printers, post-processing solutions, and the Form Auto manufacturing solution for automatic part removal. The company also develops a comprehensive portfolio of materials and 3D printing software.

Enhanced Capabilities

This acquisition builds on Formlabs’ 2019 acquisition of Spectra, which expanded the company’s materials capabilities and added an ISO 13485 certified facility. Integrating Micronics will bolster Formlabs’ SLS team, offering new tools and solutions for product designers and innovators. This collaboration is expected to enhance creativity, enable design risks, and produce robust end-use parts. By combining efforts, Formlabs aims to make 3D printing technology more accessible, providing users with unmatched reliability, print quality, and ease of use.
