Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has initiated the final phase of its three major rounds of layoffs, leading to the displacement of an additional 6,000 employees. This comes after the initial layoff of 11,000 employees in November 2022 and a second round of cuts affecting 10,000 employees in March 2023.

The latest round of layoffs primarily impacts ad sales, marketing, and partnership teams within Facebook and Meta’s business groups. When combined with the previous round in March, the total number of job cuts reaches 21,000, effectively bringing the company’s headcount back to mid-2021 levels.

While Meta has not provided public comments regarding this latest round, some affected employees have started announcing their redundancies on LinkedIn. The company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, previously described the cuts as necessary for a year of restructuring and efficiency.

Although it is believed that the three-part series of mass layoffs is now complete, there is a possibility of smaller-scale reductions in the future. Zuckerberg noted in March that in certain cases, these changes may continue until the end of the year.

Unlike Meta, Apple has managed to avoid mass layoffs, with CEO Tim Cook stating in early May 2023 that such actions are considered a last resort and not currently being contemplated by the company.
